Finished Quilts, 2010 to 2013

This section has my first nine quilts, only including those that are lap sized or larger. Wall hangings, pot holders, etc. will be shown in a separate section under "Small Projects." Starting in 2014, finishes will be grouped by year in pages across the top of the blog. This page holds things I started by hand as early as 2010, most of which were finished after I purchased my first sewing machine in August 2012; these represent my very earliest efforts with a machine, and my first year (& 3 months) of machine piecing/quilting.

My First Quilt -- "Texas Star" -- finished in December 2011
completely hand pieced, machine quilted by a family member. Pattern is Mosaic Star, from Painted Pony 'n Quilts. Fabrics are Nautical & Nice by Moda Fabrics. Lap sized quilt, approx. 64" x 64".

My Second Quilt --- "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" -- finished in September 2012
Original design, following the scrap attack triangle tutorial. Mostly hand pieced, machine quilted by me on domestic machine (Janome 7318), satin ribbon binding; floral "rick rack" is hand appliqued. Diagonal straight line quilting and free motion heart scrolls in the central diamonds.

My Third Quilt -- The Tree Skirt -- finished in December 2012
Thimbleberries pattern, minus the borders. Machine pieced & quilted on Janome 7318 home machine.

My Fourth Quilt -- First Bed-Sized Quilt -- "...and Read All Over..." -- finished March 2013
Original design, featuring comic strips that my oldest son drew, then I printed them on printable fabric. Mostly hand pieced, some machine piecing, machine quilted. Straight lines with free motion/outline quilting in the comic strip sections. Border is a morse code message. Full sized bed quilt.

My Fifth Quilt -- Reversible Bed Quilt -- "Legend of Zelda's Cat" Quilt -- finished May 2013
Original design, machine pieced, machine applique, machine quilting. Design was a collaboration/by request of my middle son. Front is the Tri-Force emblem from the Legend of Zelda video games, with the Hyrule Sword from the game appliqued on, and rupees as the pieced border section. Back is an improv pieced, over sized cat and frame of cat print fabrics, with green flannel for the rest. Full-sized bed quilt.

(Not Shown: The Diary Quilt -- Quilt top was finished in July 2013, and sent to a dear friend & long arm quilter; the Diary Quilt has its own tab, and was the first quilt top I started, and really sixth quilt top I finished).

My Sixth Quilt -- "Z's Super Mario Level" Quilt -- finished September 2013
Another original design, dictated to me by my youngest son (age 8 at the time). He specifically wanted an edge-to-edge design and for it to look like the scene extended beyond the borders of the quilt, thus half a goomba (bottom left), and half a warp pipe (bottom right). Machine pieced, machine appliqued, zig-zag outlining around all main portions as well for extra detail. Machine straight line quilted with invisible thread. Twin-sized bed quilt.

full view; it is "chopped off" on purpose

My Seventh Quilt -- "You & I..." Color Change Quilt -- finished October 2013
Original design, for my husband. The color change was his idea, the chain addition border was mine, to resemble DNA strands. Quilting is vertical double-helix "lines" running through the colored portion, and following the colored chains in the border. Border left intentionally blank. Back is recycled denim; no batting layer. Machine pieced & quilted on domestic machine.

Numbers 8 & 9 -- Sister's Ten BOM Quilts, original setting -- finished December 2013

Pieced blocks are from the Sister's Ten BOM (by Gen X Quilters), setting/arrangement is original design. Machine pieced & quilted on the same little Janome.  Purple quilt is quilted with straight lines and with "spoons" using the walking foot (and zig-zag stitch for the straight lines, to represent zippers); Cross quilt is quilted with echo quilting going out from each section of the cross, to emphasize the cross design.
